How My Career in Leadership Prepared Me to Launch as an author

I believe that in life, nothing is wasted. Every experience, challenge, and lesson we encounter holds value that can be carried into new contexts. When I first embarked on the journey to becoming an author, I didn’t realize how much my leadership background would shape the process. But three years in, as I count down the final weeks to my book launch, it’s clear: the skills I honed in leadership have been instrumental in bringing my book to life.

1. Building the Right Team

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of building and nurturing high-performing teams. That experience was invaluable when it came time to assemble my author support team. I leaned into my network, sought referrals, and looked for energetic alignment during every interaction. This approach helped me find the right developmental editor, publisher, book coach, audiobook producer, and publicist. I’m proud that my team is a group of phenomenal and brilliant women.

2. Making Decisions with Confidence

In leadership, decisiveness is key. I’ve always been comfortable making decisions, even when faced with uncertainty. That same decisiveness served me well in the book process. Whether it was selecting my cover image or choosing team members, I trusted my gut. For example, I finalized my cover image within 24 hours of reviewing the first drafts, and I selected my team based on authentic connections and strong first impressions. Every choice felt aligned, and I have no regrets.

3. Strategic Investment

As an indie author, investing financially in my book meant being intentional about every dollar spent. My leadership experience taught me the importance of strategic resource allocation. I didn’t say yes to every opportunity or follow trends just because others did. Instead, I focused on investments that felt meaningful and aligned with my vision, ensuring that both my budget and energy were well-spent.

4. Having Fun Along the Way

In my leadership roles, I always aimed to create an environment where people enjoyed showing up to work. As an author, I wanted to bring that same sense of joy to my book launch. That’s why I’m calling it the “Celebration Tour.” Reaching this milestone is a victory in itself—regardless of book sales, bestseller lists, or awards. I’m excited to celebrate with those who’ve supported me along the way, including my biggest fan—my daughter.

Why This Book Matters

While my book isn’t a traditional leadership guide, it carries universal lessons. It’s about resilience, self-discovery, and the transformative power of creative expression. It’s an invitation to sharpen your empathy, tune into your intuition, and boldly pursue your dreams.
